Spooky Stories at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center To Feature Seven Local Storytellers

October 13, 2010 Leave a comment

It’s the Spooky Season again. The world as we know it is scary enough. But there is something strangely reassuring in stories of contacts with the supernatural. Some are told in joshing fun; others are “deadly” serious. Come join this bevy of local tellers and “shiver your timbers” for a good 90 minutes of Spooky Stories.

Nebraska StoryArts (NSA) will celebrate the Halloween season at 7 p.m., Friday, October 22, at the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center, 1111 Bellevue Blvd., North, Bellevue. The evening of frights and delights is recommended for ages 12 and above.

Featured tellers are: Matt Irvin, Linda Garcia, Liz Kumru, Capt. David Mann, Lucille Saunders, Deborah Woracek and London Holmgren, a youth teller. Gail Teten, a member of the NSA board, is the emcee for the evening. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students, seniors and members of NSA. Reservations are not necessary, but call 402-551-4532 for further information.

The storytellers
Matt Irvin has been telling stories to children and adults for many years and this is his 10th year telling at Spooky Stories. He is a junior high reading teacher for the Omaha Public Schools and has a flair for scary stories and comical antics.

Linda Garcia, along with her husband Jose, created Las Artes Cultural Center where she is the Artistic Director and Art Instructor. She is with the Artist-In-Residence Program of the Nebraska Arts Council and is on the Speaker’s Bureau with the Nebraska Humanities Council.

Liz Kumru is a writer and editor in public relations at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and has been involved in storytelling since 1998. She organizes the Moonshell Storytelling Festival in September and the Liar’s Contest near April Fool’s Day.

Capt. David Mann, a 22-year veteran Omaha firefighter, put on a new hat seven years ago and became Cowboy Dave. The Bellevue native teaches the traditional morals and values of old to elementary school children, doing it the cowboy way – through cowboy poetry.

Lucille Saunders is a retired teacher/librarian who has been telling stories for 57 years. She is a member of the Omaha Organization for the Purpose of Storytelling (OOPS). Although retired, Lucille mentors students in reading at the Westside Middle School and still substitutes in the Omaha Public School system.

Deborah Woracek is a naturalist with all kinds of stories about the Fontenelle Forest.

London Holmgren, a junior at Papillion-La Vista High School, is not new to the storytelling scene. He attended the summer youth storytelling camp five times and has told on the stage at the Moonshell Festival at Mahoney State Park. He loves scary stories.

The mission of Nebraska StoryArts is to preserve, perpetuate and celebrate storytelling of all cultures and to nurture, sustain and develop the storytelling community of tellers and listeners. For more information about Nebraska StoryArts, please contact Donnis Arens at 402-551-4532, or go to the website: www.nebraskastoryarts.org.
