Classics Get to the Heart of the Musical CrazeOpera Omaha

Shows like High School Musical and Glee have been huge hits with teens, but most teens would arguably not be able to tell you much about a classic musical like “Guys and Dolls.”

Opera Omaha is hoping to change that and, at the same time, capitalize on a burgeoning interest in music and singing among the younger set. On April 16, and 18, music lovers young and old will have a rare opportunity to see an extraordinary live show created just for Omaha.

“So in Love with Broadway,” which features dazzling performances from the golden age of American musicals, will take music lovers back to where it all began, with a revue of classics such as “I’ll Know” and “Luck Be a Lady.”  Broadway Star Karen Ziemba will even sing “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” which was recently featured in Glee.

The concert also features the return of Broadway, Opera, and Television star Ron Raines who appeared this past fall with Opera Omaha in a special concert at the Holland Center for the Performing Arts, Broadway performers John Bolton and Emily Loesser (daughter of Frank Loesser); Opera Omaha’s Voices in Residence; the Opera Omaha Chorus and the Omaha Symphony will also appear.

John Wehrle, general director of Opera Omaha, is enthusiastic about  the idea of the great musical coming back into fashion. “High School Musical, Glee, even American Idol all demonstrate that the great American musical is hot. This is a chance for adults to enjoy history and music from their youth, and to introduce their children or grandchildren to a part of history. With shows like High School Musical and Glee ever-so-popular, it’s an excellent time to show your kids where it all originated from.”

According to Artistic Adviser Garnett Bruce, this is a show the public won’t want to miss. “This is a celebration of what we love about Broadway — a unique night that was created exclusively for Omaha. You will not be able to see this anywhere else; it truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

“So in Love with Broadway” performances are Friday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater. Opera Omaha is offering a special ticket price of $10 for students; single ticket prices start at $19.

Tickets can be purchased through ticketomaha.com, by calling 345-0606 or at the Ticket Omaha box office at 13th and Douglas streets. For more information on upcoming performances, visit operaomaha.org.
