Millard honored for being “Top 100” in nation
Doug Schmitt of the American Music Conference and National Association of Music Merchants traveled to Millard to recognize our district for having one of the nation’s top 100 music programs. He presented the award at last night’s school board meeting. This marks the fifth time Millard has been included in the annual “Best Communities for Music Education” list. Millard was the only district in Nebraska to make the list in 2010. The Four Chordsmen of Millard West High School represented the many talented students and teachers in Millard’s music programs. The quartet performed under the direction of Kathy Huerta-Simpson.



“LET’S GET DIRTY” DAY
Saturday, October 23, 2010: 10AM – 3PM
Find out about the many ways people use and move dirt with an event that takes being messy to a whole new level!
· Get up close with super-sized John Deere farming and construction equipment on display from Bennington Equipment and Murphy Tractor Equipment Company. See a variety of machines including a combine, tractor and backhoe! Meet their equipment pros and learn how this large equipment is used to move soil to grow crops and to build construction projects.
· Be one of the first 500 visitors and you will receive a FREE tree sapling, compliments of Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. through a partnership with The Arbor Day Foundation!

· Stop by the Fantastic Fun River Run exhibit created by the Upper Big Blue Natural Resource District and explore the challenges of maintaining a dynamic water system. As you play this giant board game, you will help maintain the ecological balance of the Harmony River, a fictitious river the game is build around.
· Stop by the Nutrients for Life Seed’s Survivor exhibit featuring two interactive computer games on soil and a sunflower seed planting station.
· Learn about the many types of organisms who call dirt their home and other fascinating soil facts at the Dig it! demonstration carts. Docents trained by soil experts from the National Resources Conservation Center will conduct a variety of science experiments the entire family will enjoy. · Dig deeper into the world of soil at the Soil Science Society of America booth. Did you know that there’s a state soil for Nebraska, called Holdrege? You will learn about the amazing world of soils – including what’s special about Holdrege soil. Soil scientists will be on hand to answer questions and help you create your very own soils project!
· Paint your own masterpiece with mud! Join the education team and use paint brushes and your fingers to create a picture with soil.

Your search begins inside the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center and continues outside along the stroller-friendly Riverview Boardwalk. walk/run begins at 10:00 a.m. and then hang around after for a pumpkin patch, food, live music from The Babbling Tabbies, and bounce house and face painting provided by Bo Bo’s Bouncy Town! Close Encounters of the Shimmy Kind
The Raqs Awn Belly Dance Collective will host “Close Encounters of the Shimmy Kind, a Halloween belly dancing event, to benefit Ted E. Bear Hollow. This event will be held on Friday,
October 29, at 7:30 p.m., at the Scoular Building Ballroom. Guests will enjoy Halloween and science-fiction themed performances by Raqs Awn members, as well as other local dance troupes, including the Lotus Dancers, Bedouin Star, Basharaat, Troupe Sicore, Doom Teks, and others.
Ted E. Bear Hollow is a grieving center for children and teens. In addition to monetary contributions, items collected during this event will help supply Ted E. Bear Hollow with materials for craft projects this winter to help children who have lost someone in their lives. Attendees can receive up to $3 off the $13 admission price for donating white Styrofoam balls (sizes 2-4 inches), 1 inch white votive candles, 2 1/2 inch clear glass votives, or fabric and paint markers.
